Slave or Free

Slave or Free?

“Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.’” John 8:34-35

Are you still a slave? What a strange question, right? I’m sure you are thinking to yourself that the slaves were freed many years ago. Yes, but this is a different kind of slave, and yet much the same. Do you find yourself being drawn to a lifestyle or even to habits that may not be pleasing to God? This could be things you view as “tiny” even. A “little” gossip with your friends, reading material that is “kind of” smutty, disparaging remarks about a coworker. Or it could be something like an affair that you view as sinful, but you’ve let yourself somehow believe that it is okay. That because your marriage isn’t what you believe it should be that you deserve to have something better. If any of these sound like you, then you are a slave, you just don’t know it. When you are caught in the grips of sin and you are allowing Satan to chain you in these ways, then he becomes your master. If you haven’t figured it out yet, he is not a kind and loving master! He makes you believe that you will find pleasure in what you are doing, but what you truly find is pain, agony, fear, sadness, shame, guilt, self-loathing.

There is a way to break free of this slavery, though. Turn to the Lord, ask forgiveness, and walk away. Yes, it is that simple. Make a decision that this is not the life you want to lead and decide that you want to fill your life with the Lord. When your heart is filled with Jesus, there is no room for Satan! His chains cannot hold you any longer. The Lord will welcome you into His family with open arms and instead of all the negative thoughts you once had about yourself, He will begin to fill you with Love! Let yourself be freed.
