Recipe for Success

Recipe for Success

Some of you may be great cooks who don’t need a recipe to make something delicious.  Others, like me, need a recipe to boil water!  For those of us needing instruction, here is a recipe for success in drawing nearer to God.  First, you need ingredients.  These will include reading your bible daily.  I suggest first thing in the morning.  To me, that tells God that you are putting him first in your day and your life.  That also keeps life from getting in the way.

The next ingredient is prayer.  Just talk to Him like you would a friend.  The next ingredient might sound weird to some of you but it will make a huge difference.  Find a Christian radio station in your area and start really listening to the words.  The next part of the recipe is not about adding anything, but really about taking things out.  Take a good look at your life and find the things that aren’t pleasing to God and REMOVE them!  Yes, this might mean that you won’t be watching your favorite TV shows or listening to the music you normally listen to.  It might mean you will have to throw away that smutty book you are currently reading.

The final ingredient, and this is the one that will make your heart grow, is to start showing love to those around you.  When Jesus was here on earth he said this: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31

We all remember the part about loving the Lord, right?  Do we really pay attention to that last part about loving our neighbor?  While He was on earth, Jesus spent much of His time caring for others.  He healed diseases and sickness among the people, drove out evil spirits and raised the dead, just to name a few of His many miracles.  As you can see, He was always watching for the needs of others and then caring for those needs.  This is how we should pattern our lives as well.  We should always be watching for the needs of those around us and then working to meet those needs.

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

Galatians 6:2
