Humble Pie

Humble Pie

Coconut crème, pecan, apple, chocolate, and strawberry are just a few of our favorite kinds of pie. Humble Pie, on the other hand, not so much. I’m sure we have all been force-fed a piece of this kind of pie at some point in our lives. Getting the joy of eating Humble Pie means we have either done or said something wrong or our mistakes are being displayed for all the world to see. Take heart Humble Pie eaters! In the Lord’s eyes, being humbled is a good thing.

Why do we hate Humble Pie so much - mostly because being humbled puts a dent in our pride. As humans, we are often prideful. We only want people to see our shiny exterior, the one we put on to cover up all the dents and dings. We do this because we fear that if people see the dents and dings, they won’t like us as well. The Lord, however, doesn’t want us to worry about pleasing the world. He wants us only to worry about what is pleasing to Him, and He already knows every dent and ding that we have and He loves us anyway. In the eyes of the Lord, having an attitude of serving and putting others ahead of ourselves, allowing ourselves to become the”least” among others actually makes us greater in His eyes.

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.” Philippians 2:3

Pride can also lead to conflicts among people. In so many instances, pride keeps the quarrel from being resolved. If we live the way the Lord has taught us in the Bible, then we will end the quarreling by putting others before ourselves. Here is the best advice to stop the unrest in our world:

Sit down with others, eat a little Humble Pie, and end your battles!
