"Mast"er of the Storm
There are times in our lives when we feel like we are riding through a storm and sometimes it feels like we may not make it out alive. Whether it is after the death of a loved one or when we are going through a divorce or some other type of turmoil, often we feel desperate. These are the times when we need the Lord the most, but sadly many of us turn away from Him instead of toward Him.
During the storm, when the ship is being tossed amongst the waves, running headlong away from the mast toward the edge of the ship is just not a good idea. At least it doesn’t sound good to me! If I had my choice, I would be hanging on to the mast. The mast is sturdy and hanging on will keep you from getting tossed overboard. Think about it, if you don’t have something sturdy to hold onto, the deck of the ship gets pretty slippery. You will continue to slip and slide around until you get thrown into the sea and drown.
Life is a lot like this, too. During the storms of your life, you can either hold tightly to the only thing that is strong enough to get you through, which is Christ, or you can continue to get tossed around by life. Without Christ you have nothing to keep you from drowning in the scary seas of sin that surround us. As we see every day, sin brings very scary things to the world around us. Eventually, this sin leads to death, not to the eternal life that Christ has planned for us if we follow Him. By holding onto the Master, you will make it through the storm and once again see the beautiful sunset at the end of the day.
“Who is like you, Lord God Almighty?
You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.
You rule over the surging sea;
when its waves mount up, you still them.”
Psalm 89:8-9
